Mumps vaccine will be offered to students
TRURO – Post-secondary and Grade 12 students in Nova Scotia will be offered a second dose of vaccine for mumps, measles and rubella.
Vaccinations (MMR) will be made available to post-secondary students at university health clinics and at special clinics to be held by a selection of colleges and universities.
Post-secondary students can also get a vaccination from their doctor.
During the 2007-08 school year, a second dose of the vaccine will be offered to all Grade 12 students and any Grade 11 students who have had only one dose.
“This vaccination program provides the best possible safeguard for these students,” said Barry Barnet, minister of Health Promotion and Protection.
There have been 461 cases of mumps in Nova Scotia since the outbreak began in February. It is the third outbreak in the province since 2005.
